UEFA EURO 2012

UEFA has reaffirmed its commitment to the implementation of the UEFA EURO 2012 ™ in Poland and Ukraine. The UEFA Executive Committee reached this decision at its meeting in Bordeaux, France, on Friday.

Number of conditions
The Committee has a number of conditions which the 2012 as co-hosts must meet in order to organize the tournament in four summers' time, with UEFA deciding in particular on the number of stadiums to be used - a maximum of eight and a at least six. The completion of stadiums in the two capitals, Warsaw (Poland) and Kiev (Ukraine), is considered crucial for the 2012-project.

UEFA President Michel Platini read the following statement at the end of the Bordeaux meeting:

"The UEFA Executive Committee has given careful consideration to a report by experts on the preparations for the UEFA EURO 2012 ™ in Poland and Ukraine. At its meeting in Zagreb in January 2008, UEFA President Michel Platini both host countries warned that the projects improve significantly, that Poland and Ukraine to the organization of the UEFA EURO 2012 ™.

"In particular the Board noted at the time that the national bodies overseeing the project was wrong, because of a lack of experience and rigor, and that the development of the necessary infrastructure required for the proper functioning of the finals was a virtual standstill come. In early July, President Platini held a UEFA delegation to Poland and Ukraine meetings at the highest level of the two states and the two associations. visits by experts, there were during the summer to ensure the ongoing preparations.

"The report, which was forwarded to the Board, takes into account fully the meetings and visits. The Board has noted that the contents of the report and would like to stress that progress has been made by both countries in the last six months at the organizational level and in the development of infrastructure elements, although progress neither uniform nor constant.

"The Board reaffirms the commitment of the organization UEFA for the UEFA Euro 2012 in Poland and Ukraine. At the same time, the Executive Committee stressed a number of conditions must be met in order to make the whole project forward. There are this:

• Host countries must continue the necessary efforts as any relaxation could cast doubt on the organization of this tournament in these countries;

• UEFA will decide how many and which stadiums (and therefore cities) will be the venue for the competition, with at least six and a maximum of eight, taking into account that contracts have been signed, with eight stadiums, cities and airports;

• It is not necessarily the same number of venues (cities) per country;

• The completion of stadiums in Kiev and Warsaw will remain an essential element of the whole project;

• The governments of both countries have their national associations and fulfill the commitments they gave to UEFA in the scope of the project, particularly in relation to accommodation and transport infrastructures. "

Capitals question
"Warsaw and Kiev is a central issue," said Platini after the meeting. The UEFA president said that if one of the two cities' stadiums were not completed, then the country would have the right to stage the last round.

Continue efforts
"There are a lot of work to do," UEFA general secretary David Taylor told uefa.com. "And both countries must continue their tireless efforts. UEFA to decide the venues for some time in the first half of next year. We want to make clear that it could be the case that there is no equality in relation to the number of venues in Poland and Ukraine. If progress is not even, there may be more locations in one country than in others. "

The observance of the obligations
"It is important that the two main cities are as host cities," Mr Taylor added. "If they are not, I fear that would be the end for the country concerned. Finally, the governments of both countries must fulfill their obligations in terms of infrastructure, especially in the areas of housing and transport."

Full speed ahead
"Together with our colleagues from Poland and Ukraine, our organization is good," said Martin Kallen, who recently launched Euro 2008 SA, the organization of business this summer for the finals in Austria and Switzerland, and who is now on the event 2012. "We are together a business plan and a project plan and are working full speed ahead."
